The Tusculum Substation is one of Greeneville Energy Authority’s (GEA) most significant and longstanding infrastructure assets. Due to aging equipment and growing capacity limitations, GEA has initiated a comprehensive rebuild of this facility. This article provides an overview of the substation’s background, its role in GEA’s service territory, and key details about the planned upgrade.

Overview & Location

The Tusculum Substation is located along Highway 11-E in front of the American Greetings facility. It serves as one of four delivery points through which GEA receives power from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and it is the oldest of the four. The substation was originally built and owned by TVA.

It is worth noting that despite its name, the town of Tusculum is primarily served not by this substation, but by GEA’s Shiloh Substation, which is located on the southern edge of Tusculum University’s campus and is fed from the Pioneer Substation delivery point.

Service Territory & Customer Impact

The Tusculum Substation plays a critical role in GEA’s overall service delivery:

Currently serves approximately 10,400 customers (meters), representing more than 25% of GEA’s total customer base.

Powers seven distribution substations throughout the area.

Normal service territory extends from Baileyton to Horse Creek in Eastern Greene County.

Existing Equipment & Capacity Concerns

The existing transformers at the Tusculum Substation date to approximately 1962 and were originally manufactured in Italy. While they have served GEA reliably for decades, their age and capacity have become limiting factors for both growth and contingency planning in the area. The current equipment is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of a growing service territory or to provide adequate backup capacity in the event of an outage or emergency.

Upgrade Project Details

GEA has initiated a full rebuild of the Tusculum Substation. The following details outline the scope and financial components of the project:

Total estimated project cost: $13,748,000

Two new transformers: $9,093,050 — the largest single cost component of the rebuild.

Transformer lead time: At the time of bidding, the fastest available lead time was 88 weeks from the date of order. Other manufacturers quoted even longer timelines.

Every spring, college basketball fans across the country tune in for one of the most exciting tournaments in sports. From buzzer beaters to Cinderella runs, March Madness delivers weeks of nonstop action. If you’ve cut the cord and switched to streaming TV, you can still catch every game. Here’s how.

Where March Madness Games Are Broadcast

Tournament games are split across four networks: CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV. To watch the entire tournament, you’ll need a streaming service that carries all four channels.

Several live TV streaming services offer access to these channels, including:

YouTube TV

Hulu + Live TV

Sling TV

DirecTV Stream

These services let you stream games live on smart TVs, streaming devices, smartphones, tablets, or computers.

Other Ways to Watch March Madness

NCAA March Madness Live App

The official NCAA March Madness Live app lets fans stream tournament games on smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and streaming devices. The app includes live games, highlights, and bracket tracking throughout the tournament. Some games may be available with a preview, but full access typically requires signing in with a participating TV provider or live TV streaming service.

Max (formerly HBO Max)

Max carries games that air on TNT, TBS, and truTV. This can be a convenient option for viewers who already subscribe to Max and want access to those matchups without signing up for a full live TV streaming package.

Paramount+

Paramount+ is another option for streaming tournament games that air on CBS. The service provides live access to your local CBS station in most areas, allowing fans to watch games without a cable subscription.

Keep in mind that Paramount+ only carries CBS broadcasts, so you would still need another service to watch games airing on TNT, TBS, or truTV.

Stream Every Game with Confidence

March Madness often means multiple games happening at the same time, so a reliable internet connection is key. With GEA Connect’s fiber network, you can stream live sports, connect multiple devices, and follow every moment of the tournament without missing a play.

When you choose GEA Connect’s business fiber phone and internet service, you’re getting more than a connection. You’re getting a local partner who’s with you every step of the way, from the first conversation to years down the road.

We Start With a Site Survey

Before we run a single cable, one of our local representatives will come out and walk the property with you. We’ll show you exactly how the fiber will enter your building and work with you to determine the best path to your demark location. No surprises, no guesswork, just a clear plan tailored to your business.

Your Phone Setup, Done Right

Whether you have one phone line, multiple lines, or a fax line, we’ll configure everything the way that works best for your operation. And the best part? You don’t have to change a thing. We can port your existing phone number, and you keep your current email address. All we need is your current provider’s account number and the number you’d like to transfer.

Support That’s Actually Local

We’re not a large corporation routing your calls overseas. When you call for support, you reach someone right here in Greeneville who understands your business and knows how much even a small amount of downtime can cost you. That’s why we offer 24/7 technical support and roll a truck anytime at no cost to you. We never charge for internet truck rolls, period.

A Few Advantages of Choosing GEA Fiber:

A dedicated local representative available whenever you need one

Two on-staff network engineers based right here in Greeneville

24/7 technical support

Local technicians who work exclusively in the Greeneville area

Consistent, straightforward billing… no bill shock

Keep your existing email and phone number (just provide your current provider’s account number and the number to port)

Seasonal service options available

Small Business Deserves Big Reliability

At GEA Connect, we know the stakes. We built our service around the needs of local businesses because we’re a local business ourselves. When you partner with us, you get the technology of a major provider with the care and accountability of a neighbor.

In an age where fast, reliable internet is essential for work, education, entertainment, and everyday life, choosing the right provider matters more than ever. While big national internet companies promise high speeds and flashy marketing, they often fall short where it counts most: in local service, value, and community commitment.

That’s where GEA Connect powered by Greeneville Energy Authority (GEA) stands apart.

1. Built for Our Community, Not Wall Street

Unlike national internet providers that answer to distant corporate offices and shareholders, GEA Connect is locally owned and operated. That means:

• Your service provider lives and works in your community

• Decisions are made with local needs in mind

• Revenue stays right here, supporting local infrastructure and services

When you choose GEA Connect, you’re choosing a company that has a real interest in the success and prosperity of Greeneville and surrounding areas.

2. Unbeatable Customer Service

Big nationwide providers can be hard to reach and even harder to please. Call centers are often overseas, and hold times can be long.

With GEA Connect:

• Customer service is local and responsive

• Help is just a phone call away

• Technicians are familiar with the area and understand our customers

You deserve personalized support — not endless menus and automated responses. At GEA Connect, you get real people who truly care.

3. Consistently Fast and Reliable Internet

GEA Connect delivers high-speed internet designed to meet the needs of modern homes and businesses:

• Stream 4K video without buffering

• Work from home with confidence

• Power multiple devices at once

• Enjoy reliable connectivity for gaming, schooling, and more

Because GEA Connect is built on robust local infrastructure, customers experience less congestion and more consistent performance than many national networks.

4. Transparent Pricing, No Hidden Fees

National providers often lure customers with low promotional rates, only to surprise them later with equipment fees, data caps, and price hikes once the promotion ends.

GEA Connect offers:

• Clear, upfront pricing

• No surprise charges

• Affordable plans for every need

You should know exactly what you’re paying for, that’s the GEA commitment.

5. A Partner in Economic Growth

High-quality internet isn’t just a convenience; it’s essential for economic opportunity. GEA Connect helps:

• Attract new businesses to the region

• Support remote workers and entrepreneurs

• Enhance educational tools for students

• Provide internet access that helps level the playing field

When you choose GEA Connect, you’re investing in the future of our community.

6. Community First, Always

GEA Connect doesn’t just provide internet, it supports local initiatives and community betterment. Choosing a local provider means supporting:

• Local jobs

• Community events and sponsorships

• Infrastructure improvements that benefit everyone

That’s something national companies simply can’t match.

The Right Choice for Local Internet

At the end of the day, internet service is more than just speed; it’s reliability, value, service, and community impact.

GEA Connect, powered by Greeneville Energy Authority, offers all of that and more, with local care and hometown commitment that national providers just can’t compete with.

Choose Better. Choose Local. Choose GEA Connect.

GREENEVILLE, TN – January 22, 2026 – Greeneville Energy Authority (GEA) is closely monitoring a significant winter storm forecast to impact the Greeneville and Greene County area this weekend. Crews are prepared to respond quickly and safely to any service disruptions as weather conditions allow.

Residents Urged to Prepare Now

GEA encourages all customers to take the following steps before the storm arrives:

Charge phones, battery packs, and medical devices

Prepare flashlights, batteries, blankets, and warm clothing

Stock up on food, water, and medications

Protect pipes by letting faucets drip when temperatures drop

Check on elderly neighbors and loved ones

If you have medical necessities, make preparations in advance and ensure you have a backup plan in place

Critical Generator Safety Reminder

While generators can provide temporary power during outages, improper use can result in carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical fires, and serious injury or death to line workers.

GEA reminds customers to:

Never run generators, grills, or propane heaters indoors or in garages

Keep generators outdoors only, positioned far from windows and doors

Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet; backfeeding electricity can cause serious injury or death to linemen working to restore power

Maintain a backup power plan for medical equipment and keep emergency contacts readily available

Storm Response and Road Safety

GEA crews will respond as quickly and safely as possible during the storm, though ice and hazardous road conditions may delay restoration efforts. The utility will provide transparent updates on work locations throughout the weather event and asks the public to avoid active work zones when possible, to help keep crews safe.

Stay Informed

Customers can monitor the following channels for updates:

Social media for real time storm updates

The GEA SmartHub app for outage information

Report outages via SmartHub or by calling 423-636-6200
