A Quick Note on This Morning’s Brief Service Interruption

We’ve received several calls and messages from customers asking about a short outage around 1:00 AM on 6/29/26. If you noticed your GEA Fiber service drop out briefly, you weren’t imagining it.
GEA Connect, powered by Greeneville Energy Authority, was performing scheduled network maintenance during that window. The interruption lasted only about 10 minutes, but we know any outage, even a short one, can be frustrating, especially if it happens to interrupt something you’re doing. We’d like to take a moment to explain why maintenance like this happens and what we’re doing behind the scenes to keep your service running smoothly.

Why We Perform Network Maintenance

To deliver the fast, dependable fiber service our customers count on, our network has to be kept current. That means our network engineering team is regularly:
  • Installing software and firmware updates that improve performance and patch security vulnerabilities
  • Upgrading or replacing hardware such as switches, routers, and optical equipment
  • Adding capacity to keep up with the growing number of customers and devices on our network
  • Testing and fine-tuning configurations to catch small issues before they become big ones
Most of this work happens entirely in the background, with no impact on your service at all. But some updates, like restarting core equipment or swapping out hardware, require briefly taking a piece of the network offline. When that’s the case, our team plans the work carefully and keeps the disruption as short as possible.

Why So Early in the Morning?

You’ll typically see maintenance windows scheduled in the very early morning hours, like last night’s. That’s intentional; it’s when the fewest customers are actively using the network, so if a brief interruption is unavoidable.

Our Commitment to You

We strive every day to provide the most reliable internet service backed by local, hands-on support. Routine maintenance is one of the ways we keep that promise; it’s a small, short-term trade-off that helps us avoid bigger, longer outages down the road.
