
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) acquired East Tennessee Light and Power Company from Cities Service Power and Light Company in December 1944. Subsequently, on March 30, 1945, the Greeneville Board of Mayor and Alderman purchased East Tennessee Light and Power Company, establishing the Greeneville Light & Power System as a Municipal Power Distributor. The organization began providing electricity to Greene County, Tennessee that same year.
By the 1950s, electrical service had expanded to rural areas throughout the region. Having completed 60 years of service in 2005, Greeneville Light & Power System became recognized for its reliable service and some of the lowest rates in the Southeast region. The organization has also played a significant role in attracting industry to Greene County, Tennessee.
In July 2019, Greeneville Light and Power officially became the Greeneville Energy Authority to position itself to offer broadband service.
